Renowned around town as a quick and healthy lunch joint, Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop has now expanded into the dinner market with a new location on Hollywood Boulevard, a block from the Pantages.
The menu includes the familiar staples, like the famed Turkey Melt on pretzel bread, tortilla pizzas and, of course, the salads. But you’ll also find a handful of entrees, such as salmon and flat-iron steak.
Whoa, back up, Scott. Did you say tortilla pizza? Yes, I did. And if you’ve never tried the Wild Mushroom and Truffle Pizza, made on Greenleaf’s signature low-carb, high-protein whole-wheat tortilla, you probably need to ask yourself some hard questions. The dish is less that 100 calories, so what’s the problem?
“It’s an approachable menu with the healthiest possible options,” owner Jonathan Rollo once told me, and that fact remains, as the list of items easily fits on the chalkboard behind the registers.
Rollo says his favorite item is the “Zorra the Greek — a unique take on the Greek salad.” He’s also keen on the Mexsplosion, featuring “a tangy, spicy combination,” and which gets even better if you throw on some chicken.
Along with dinner options, the restaurant has also added a full bar with indoor seating on one side and patio seating on the other. A short list of cocktails provides something for every type of drinker, epitomized by a team of mules — Moscow, Kentucky and Mexican — featuring vodka, bourbon and tequila, respectively. Of course, the place still offers craft brews and wines, all of which are made locally except for a Malbec that journeyed from the other side of the Equator.
The fast-casual dining aspect is perfect if you’re looking to get a quick bite to eat before catching a show, as you can probably be amply fed in 10 to 15 minutes, while being one or two cocktails up on the self you were when you came in. Better still, come early and stay for a while. There’s a lush, gorgeous patio with a fire pit, where you can enjoy some fresh air and likely enough, some good company.
