The setting and sound of Hotel Café is always spectacular. Set in a dimly lit, red hued, underground lounge-like atmosphere, musicians can showcase the beauty of their instrumental voices. It’s a great little joint to sip a cocktail and have your ears, minds and souls inspired with sound. Such was the evening with Mia Maestro! Her pure voice washed over us magically as it ebbed and flowed through varied ranges. Almost in a trance in some moments and then bubbling with schoolgirl laughter the next, her dynamic spirit couldn’t help but be divulged. It was evident that she is naturally equipped in beauty, character and sensitivity to be the actress. But, although she is well into to building a strong career in acting, Maestro has always felt a special passion for music, reflecting, “Writing songs feels a lot more personal— I’m more vulnerable when I’m doing music. I’ve always believed that there’s a deep connection between singing and showing a glimpse of your spirit.”
The violist and guitarist were incredible musicians as well, bringing forth a blending of intricate string work, melodious pulls, and a pulsating rhythm that was almost seamless. The three of them played beautifully on the Hotel Café stage. You can catch them for two more shows during Mia’s residency on October 15th and October 22nd at 8:00pm, where the trio will be sharing their debut album, Si Agua, which was just released on October 7 as a joint venture between pioneering indie record labels, Nacional Records and Arts & Crafts Records.
A talented actress, singer and songwriter— Maestro has created a wide array of complex and memorable characters on-screen throughout her versatile career, while also carving out her own unique place in the indie music world. Currently, Maestro can be seen starring in the hit FX television series The Strain. Created and directed by Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro, the high concept thriller was FX’s most-watched premiere ever and was just renewed for a second season. The show wrapped its first season on October 5th. Maestro made her screen debut in Carlos Saura’s Tango, which received Golden Globe® and Academy Award® nominations for Best Foreign Film. In 2004, Maestro starred in The Motorcycle Diaries opposite Gael Garcia Bernal, which also received a Golden Globe® nomination for Best Foreign Film. Her other film credits include Miramax’s critically acclaimed biopic Frida, staring Salma Hayek and directed by Julie Taymor, and Oliver Stone’s Savages opposite Benicio del Toro, among many others.
Mia made the inspired decision to recorded Si Agua in Iceland, after visiting the country for the first time to open for acclaimed Icelandic singer-songwriter Emiliana Torrini‘s shows. An eclectic array of incredibly talented solo musicians and composers were brought together for the recordings, bringing their studio experiences and personal aesthetic touches to each song. The medley includes experimental artist Ben Frost, bass saxophonist Colin Stetson, pianist Thomas Bartlett, Shahzad Ismaily and Björk / CocoRosie producer Valgeir Sigurðsson. Also adding an orchestral layer to the album is composer Nico Muhly (Jónsi, Antony and the Johnsons), who wrote the string and brass arrangements that were realized by members of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. Si Agua also features collaborations with pop artist, Damien Rice. The album sees Maestro capturing a collection of songs with indelible pop melodies and superb, artful musicianship. As Maestro’s lyrics fluctuate between English and Spanish, her Argentinian upbringing consistently echoes throughout the album. This is especially present in the beautiful video for the track “Blue Eyed Sailor”.
Si Agua, which translates to “if water,” and through the songs Mia’s music and lyrics speak on her experience inside the life giving, healing substance. In speaking with Feist for Interview Magazine she relayed that, “A lot of songs on the album have to do with my experiences in the water, or melodies that I’ve come up with when I’m on a boat or in the middle of nowhere or taking some quiet time on my own.” Take some time to soak yourself in the sound that Mia has created. The beauty and spirit of her music might compel you to land in your own place of peace.
Listen to her absolutely beautiful video for “Blue Eyed Sailor” from Si Agua, and a enjoy a preview the album in its entirety – a gorgeous and evocative body of work.
