We first discovered Old Colony Palms about ten years ago as this romantic dreamy boutique hotel in Palm Springs is tucked in the heart of town. Located in the Movie Colony and renamed The Colony Palms Hotel and Bungalows, this intimate adults-only 57-room sanctuary is every Angeleno’s much-needed escape to get away from it all.
Revamped as a Steve Hermann Hotel with green and white decor, similar to the vibe at the Beverly Hills Hotel, the palm tree-poking property is hugged by the San Jacinto Mountains. The hotel joins L’Horizon Resort and Spa/Hermann Bungalows as their sister property. Steps from the city’s uptown, Colony Palms is an easy walk to explore the design district, complete with boutiques, vintage shops, restaurants, design stores, and cafes.
Once “the” place to be seen in Palm Springs, the former restaurant bar Purple Palm adjacent to the pool used to be decked in floor-to-ceiling purple-printed wallpaper. It was originally built in 1936 by reputed Purple Gang Mobster, Al Wertheimer….the Colony Palms was once a saloon, speakeasy, and gambling house that later became a playground for Hollywood icons including Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, and Frank Sinatra.
Today The Colony Palms is still the place to be seen or perhaps to hide and rejuvenate as this understated luxurious setting brings a dash of Hollywood glamour to the desert.
Find the ultimate relaxation here – on your veranda or poolside as the sunset hues unleash over the land. The magic of the desert is easy to embrace at Colony Palms.
When visiting Palm Springs, your experience will be elevated by staying in a boutique hotel. While Colony Palms is at the top of our list, we also adore the following intimate escapes:
